Forced Reset Trigger: How It Works, Fitment and Legality

A forced reset trigger is a drop-in AR-15 fire control group that uses the energy of the bolt carrier to push the trigger forward after each shot, instead of waiting for your finger to release it. One pull still fires one round. Only the reset is mechanical, and that single distinction is what keeps it outside the federal definition of a machine gun.

What a forced reset trigger is

Start with an ordinary AR-15 trigger. You pull, the hammer falls, the round fires. Before the rifle will fire again, you have to let the trigger travel far enough forward for the disconnector to hand the hammer back to the sear. That forward travel is the reset, and on a conventional trigger your finger does all of it.

A forced reset design changes only that part of the cycle. The trigger assembly carries a lever that the bolt carrier strikes as it travels rearward, and that lever drives the trigger forward against your finger. The rifle performs the reset instead of you. Everything else about the firing sequence is unchanged.

How the mechanism works

The sequence is short. You pull the trigger and the round fires. Gas drives the bolt carrier rearward, ejecting the case and cocking the hammer. On its way back the carrier trips the reset lever, which pushes the trigger forward faster than a person can deliberately release it. The trigger is now reset, but nothing further happens until you pull it again.

What your rifle needs

Because the mechanism is driven by carrier movement, the rest of the rifle matters far more than it would with a conventional trigger. Three things decide whether one runs:

  • An M16-profile bolt carrier group. The full-auto profile leaves enough material at the rear of the carrier to engage the reset lever reliably. A semi-profile carrier is the single most common reason an FRT will not run.
  • A heavier buffer. H2 is the usual starting point and H3 is not unusual. The point is to slow the cycle enough that the carrier does not outrun the trigger.
  • A genuinely mil-spec lower. The fire control pocket needs correct dimensions and clearance. Non-mil-spec receivers and unusual selector cuts cause fitment problems.

Why a full-auto bolt carrier does not make your rifle automatic

This worries people more than it should. An M16-profile carrier is a lump of steel with a different rear profile. It does not add an auto sear, and on its own it changes nothing about how many rounds fire per trigger pull. Most current AR-15s already ship with one. What makes a rifle a machine gun under federal law is firing more than one round per function of the trigger, and no bolt carrier does that by itself.

Actually shooting one

An FRT is not an install-and-forget part. The technique owners describe is trapping: holding steady rearward pressure so the trigger resets against your finger rather than releasing fully between shots. Too little pressure and the reset does not register; too much and you fight the mechanism.

Recoil management changes too. Owner reports consistently describe the muzzle being well off the original aim point by the third round, which is why controlled two- and three-round bursts are the practical unit of fire rather than long strings. Treat the first range trip as setup rather than performance.

Wear and maintenance

Higher cyclic rates mean more heat and faster wear on fire control components, and this is the part most buying guides skip. Inspect the trigger assembly and pins more often than you would a conventional trigger, watch for peening on the reset lever, and keep the rifle properly lubricated. A unit that has run thousands of rounds hot is not in the same condition as one that has not.

Forced reset triggers spent roughly four years being treated by the ATF as machine guns. In May 2025 the Department of Justice settled with Rare Breed Triggers and abandoned that position, and the agency published notice that seized units would be returned to their owners — you can read the ATF notice directly. Congress’s own research service set out the background in a July 2025 CRS report, which is the most neutral account available.

A settlement is not a statute, and state law was never touched by it. Several states restrict rapid-fire trigger activators independently, and the published state lists contradict one another more than most pages admit. Check your state and local laws before ordering.

Forced reset vs binary vs Super Safety

These get conflated constantly. A binary trigger fires on both the pull and the release, so one cycle of the finger produces two rounds. A forced reset trigger fires one round per pull and simply returns the trigger forward mechanically. A Super Safety is different again: a lever-cam device that works through the safety selector rather than replacing the fire control group, which is why its fitment and failure modes are not the same as a cassette FRT’s. Terminology is genuinely muddled here: the Partisan Disruptor, for example, is sold by most retailers as an FRT while its maker calls it an assisted reset trigger descended from the TAC-CON 3MR. Check what the manufacturer says rather than the listing.

Common questions

Does a forced reset trigger make a rifle automatic?

No. One pull still fires one round. Holding the trigger down does not produce continuous fire, and that is the basis of the current federal position.

Will one fit any AR-15?

No. It needs a mil-spec lower with a correctly machined fire control pocket, an M16-profile bolt carrier group, and usually a heavier buffer. Non-mil-spec receivers are a common obstacle.

Why will mine not reset?

Almost always gas and mass rather than the trigger. Check the carrier profile first, then buffer weight, then ammunition, then the lower.

Are they legal where I live?
